Air filters are one of the most important parts of your HVAC system, but they can only do their job if they are the best choice for your unique home. After all, not all air filters are created equal, and the component comes in a variety of sizes and types. Not sure which air filter you need? Learn more here.
Finding the Right Air Filter
Several factors help determine which air filter is right for your air conditioning system, including:
Determine the dimensions. The first step is finding a filter that is the correct size for your air conditioning system. Fortunately, this step is relatively simple. If there is an existing air filter, the dimensions will typically be printed on the frame. If the dimensions aren’t clearly listed, the simplest way to determine the size is by whipping out a trusty tape measurer to get the correct measurements. All you have to do is measure the dimensions of the slot where the air filter is placed.
Pick a style. Air filters come in a variety of different styles, including fiberglass, polyester, electrostatic, washable, pleated and more. Each filter is designed to serve its own unique purpose. For example, polyester air filters tend to be higher quality than other types of air filters and have a higher airflow resistance. Which type of filter you choose should ultimately depend on your personal preferences.
Check the MERV rating. MERV is short for minimum efficiency reporting value and is used to measure the quality and effectiveness of an air filter. MERV ratings typically fall between one and 20, with more efficient air filters rating higher.
How to Change the Air Filter
You should change your air filter each month to ensure efficiency. When changing the air filter, locate the component for your unit and remove the old air filter. Once you remove the old air filter, slide the new air filter into the correct position. Air filters come with arrows and a simple guide that should be easy to follow. Once the new filter is in place, reattach the cover and you are set for the next month.
