What Are Electrostatic Filters?

What Are Electrostatic Filters?

There are a slew of air filters you can choose from for your air conditioning system, from fiberglass to polyester and washable. With all of the available options, you may be wondering which one is right for you. Differing from the traditional fiberglass air filters, electrostatic filters are a less common option but are great for your AC and here’s why:

The Anatomy of an Electrostatic Filter

Electrostatic filters are the highest quality air filters you can buy. Similar to fiberglass air filters, electrostatic filters are typically rectangular in shape and are available in various dimensions in order to fit a range of HVAC systems.

Electrostatic filters are reusable so they are fashioned with a durable outside frame, typically made of aluminum. Within the filter there are several layers of woven polyurethane and polypropylene fibers. These layers work by creating positive and negative charges to capture airborne particles.

How Do Electrostatic Filters Work?

Electrostatic filters work thanks in part to the polyurethane and polypropylene blend used within the filtering material. The blend’s fibers are specially formulated so that as air passes by, strong static charges are generated. The various layers within the filtration material receive opposite charges and work to capture unwanted pollutants by attracting airborne particles like a magnet. These “magnets” work as particles of dust, mold, fungi and the like travel through the ductwork of the HVAC system and towards the filter.

As the airborne particles pass through a synthetic filter layer with a positive charge, the charge is transferred to the particles. The airborne particles continue traveling to the various layers within the oppositely-charge filtration system and are ultimately stopped before they can enter the rooms of your home.

What are the Benefits?

Electrostatic filters tout numerous benefits for your air conditioning system, your home and your family. Here are just a few of the benefits you can take advantage of when you choose electrostatic filters:

  • Usability – Electrostatic filters are easy to use and can be cleaned and reused!
  • Increased savings – Your air conditioning system is most efficient when the airflow is efficient. Electrostatic filters greatly improve airflow, meaning you can increase your energy savings and get more for your money.
  • Cleaner air – Did you know that the air in your home can be more polluted than the air outside? Because we spend the majority of our time indoors, it’s important that the air we breathe is clean.
  • Improved health – Electrostatic filters are great at improving indoor air quality. Electrostatic filters help fight air pollution, which can improve the health of you and your loved ones. For those who suffer from allergies or asthma, electrostatic filters can help them breathe a little easier!
