Can a Ductless AC System Efficiently Cool My Home?

Can a Ductless AC System Efficiently Cool My Home?

Air conditioning systems are big investments, so it’s no surprise that when it comes to cooling your home, you’ll want to select the best option for you, your home and your budget. But with all of the makes and models available today, which is better: central air conditioning systems or ductless air conditioning systems?

Although central air conditioning systems have long been the go-to for home and business owners, ductless air conditioning systems are gaining popularity. Learn more about ductless air conditioning systems here.

What Is a Ductless AC System?

A ductless air conditioning system is just that…ductless! The best way to describe a ductless air conditioning system is to look at it in comparison with central AC. A typical central air conditioning system contains an outdoor cabinet, which houses a condenser coil and compressor as well as an indoor evaporator coil. These parts work together to remove heat and moisture from your home via an intricate system of ductwork. Ductless air conditioning systems on the other hand work to remove heat and moisture from your home but without the ductwork (hence their name).

How Do Ductless AC Systems Work?

A ductless air conditioning system works similarly to a traditional air conditioning system. Both systems typically have two units that are situated inside and out. When warm air is inside of your home, an evaporator coil transfers the heat energy to the refrigerant located inside the coil. This transfer essentially cools the air before the refrigerant is pumped back to the compressor. The heat absorbed by the refrigerant is removed to the outside of your home, while cooled air is blown inside. Ductless air conditioning systems however, dispersed air via the indoor unit, rather than ductwork.

What Type of Home Is Best Suited for a Ductless System?

Ductless air conditioning systems are a great option for many homeowners. Like central air conditioners, a ductless AC can provide consistent temperatures throughout your home and improve the air quality within your home as well. While ductless air conditioning systems aren’t the best option for all homes, a ductless AC might be beneficial for your if:

You live in an old home. Older homes typically don’t have existing ductwork, and adding ductwork can be a big inconvenience. Ductless systems will provide quality cooling power without the ductwork.

You’re adding on. If you’re making any additions to your home, ductless air conditioners are a great option instead of having to reroute existing ductwork. Ductless ACs are always great for cooling garages or work spaces.

Your space is limited. Small homes may not be able to fit ductwork.

You still have window units. If you’re looking to upgrade from those outdated window units, but aren’t sure if you want to commit to a central air conditioning system, a ductless AC is a great option.
