How Air Conditioning Changed the World

Today, it’s easy to take air conditioning for granted. For the majority of us, it has always been a part of our lives, and it is hard to imagine a world without it. What many do not realize is that air conditioning doesn’t just keep us comfortable; it is responsible for many of the things that we love. Here is a list of just a few of things that would not be possible without air conditioning.

Hollywood’s Golden Age

In the 1920s, no one was able to afford air conditioning. And in the summer months people searched for any possible way to stay cool. This is what brought so many to the movie theaters. Air conditioning was still a novelty, so going to the movies on a hot summer day was a fun and exciting way to stay cool. Many people attribute air conditioning to the the rise of Hollywood’s golden age. Without AC, summer blockbusters would have never become so popular, and our favorite summer movies such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park and The Avengers might have never been created.

Vegas Baby

Today, Las Vegas is the 31st most populated city in America, and one of the top tourist attractions. Visitors come from all over to gamble, shop and enjoy the shows. This iconic city would not be possible without the invention of air conditioning. Before air conditioning became popular, Vegas was nothing more than a small city in the middle of the desert. Thanks to AC, casinos and other attractions were built, and people could comfortably live and visit this desert city.

Glass Towers

Some of the most iconic towers ever built would not be possible without AC. Towers made of all glass windows were inconceivable before air conditioning, because they would let in too much light. This would heat up rooms too fast in the summer, and make it way too uncomfortable to work. If AC had never been invented, you could kiss goodbye to your office with a view. All windows would have to be small and left open at all times to let in the breeze.

Sugary Sweets

Factories were among the first to see the potential of air conditioning. Manufacturers of chocolate were able to improve their production quality and productivity when offering temperature controlled factories. They are not the only ones, however. Producers of textiles, cigars and other goods jumped on board, giving us a larger variety of products and helping America’s economy boom.

The Happiest Place on Earth

No one wants to imagine a world without Disney. However, if air conditioning had never been thought of, the classic theme park may have never been created. Not only did AC grow the population in Orlando, it allowed people to go on summer vacation for the first time. Cooled hotels along with AC in cars let American’s take long road trips during the summer months. Disney World became a popular destination and was able to grow into the happiest place on Earth.
